Comment Spam, Yuck!
« on: Dec 04, 2010 @ 09:58 AM »
On my blog, I tend to deal with a huge amount of comment spam. I have captcha so that weeds out all of the bots that automatically do it but there is still the human spammers that can pass captcha and although some of these may add to your comment #'s it doesn't look good on your blog and should be watched and cleaned up.

Some of the the things that I consider spam, even if it's a valid comment are things like the name. If your commenters name is "replica handbags", I don't care what the comment it.. it's spam and should be trashed because generally they are just trying to get their "name" linked to their website which is keyword spamming.

Random, off topic links are also spam to me. If my post is about Dogs and I get a comment like, "Love the post. Check out http://www.Tinfoil.Com!" it's trashed too!

Don't let random comments hijack your post or leave it looking unmonitored. A few spam posts will lead to lots more!

most the SPAM I get are on older posts, that I doubt anyone reads anymore. I also mostly get the SPAM that blogger/blogspot weeds out for me.
some are interesting to read.. with the weird, nonsense random generated words..LOL\

I don't get real people spam....yet... hopefully never....

Here is another spam tactic to look out for... Keyword Comment Spam!

I get this all the time. Some one will see that the name is linked to the website and instead of using their name, it says "Baby Gifts" or "Lowest Mortgage Rate". Sometimes the message makes sense, generally not really, but it makes it obvious that the commenter is not sincere. Even if the comment makes sense, I will remove these.

A good comment system should automatically add nofollow tags to comment links so really it's a waste of time since these kind of comments are generally attempting to get some SEO benefit out of the link vs. actual visitors.

I am new to the blogging world..  the  SPAM comments are killing me..   I was getting about a dozen a day..  Now I'm getting about a dozen an hour..    Most are keyword spams..  Some sex stuff, but mostly  "this is very interesting... you've done it!"   and crap like that...

Is there anything I can do to decrease this.    I'm now spending as much time deleted Spam comments as I am blogging.   Maybe more...   ugh!

I was gettting drowned in spam comments...weathervane, safety signs, SEO stuff, custom t-shirts, etc. I added Akismet and, tada! All of those annoying comments are filtered into my spam folder. I still check through them regularly to make sure nothing "real" has landed in there but so far, so good. It's really worked.

I ended up paying a small amount to Akisment (payment to them is all up to you...nothing to a few dollars) because I just feel that it's been an extremely helpful plugin and they deserve something!

I hated Akismet. I would rather deal with the spam than have Akismet blocking all of my friends comments too. They have a horrible system of blocking people who are not spammers and it's almost impossible get your name off of their spam list once it's added.

Some captcha options are great. Some are not. Some are so swervy, I can't read them at all and have to refresh the image a million times. Or worse... listen to the audio. So yes, I totally agree that if it prevents your friends or valid commentors from commenting, it's not a good system.

Your comment system may have a certain font that it uses. If your comfortable with a little hacking, you can sometimes switch out the font that it uses. Of course that depends on your particular system. I like one's that offer an option to use numbers. Numbers are usually easier to read and you don't have to worry about capital letters.
