Title: Best tags for posts to get found
Post by: meaningfulmommy on May 19, 2014 @ 07:39 AM
I need help with how many tags to use approx. per post and terms that seem to be found more by the search engines.

I have quite a few posts that have not been read by anyone.

I have a month old blog and 65 followers. I would love to get my blog out there!!

Thanks!

My feelings are to limit tags and only tag items you write about often.

You'll get a better idea of what tags to use as you continue blogging. My particular blogging platform limits it to 5 per post and I've found that sufficient. Only the top 5 most relevant tags, for my readers not SEO, make it. Any of my posts that needs more, are usually very scattered posts that I have to edit or re-write.

Tags ultimately should be for navigation... for your readers. Keep seo in mind of course but always put the reader first and you'll find that an organized site with user-friendly navigation and rich content will in turn give you good search engine results.

Like Karen said, tags are for users rather than search engines.  If you want to get more traffic from google, you should read more about On-Page SEO, use right keywords in your blog title and post. Try Google Keyword Planner and check if there  are good keywords with low competition.

What type of "tags" are you talking about? WordPress tags? Or keyword tags in your HTML (meta)?

Good point, I would also recommend you use the Yoast plugin if you are using  Word Press for your blog.

Tags are subjective to the content of your post. You want to use tags that are relevant to what you've written for that particular post or page.

For example, if I were to write a post about my experience starting a business and my content was very targeted and revolved around that topic then my tags might look something like

business, entrepreneurship, entrepreneur, starting a business, how to start a business

As Karen stated, tags are meant to be used as somewhat of a navigation piece for your users. You'll want to use the same tags for similar posts so users can click those tags and see related posts that you've previously written.

When the title of your post or page, permalink, content of the post or page, meta keywords and description are relevenat to each other Google and other SEs (Search Engines) will see this relevancy and reward you with higher rankings. On top of that, you'll want to focus on keyword density in your content. Don't stuff your content with certain keywords or phrases over and over. Use them naturally but also use those keywords or phrases in your permalink, meta keywords/descriptions, and tags.

SEO is a whole other beast in itself. There's onsite SEO and offsite SEO. Your onsite focuses on page load time, bounce rate, internal linking, title tags, meta keywords and descriptions, keyword density on your pages, having an XML sitemap to name a few and the list goes on.
