I wrote a blog entry about 2 months ago on Kids and Social Media. It went viral on Facebook and I am still receiving messages about it. 95% are positive comments thanking me for enlightening them. 5% are parents who say I'm the crazy mom. Hey, that's ok. At least I'm in the know.
I was inspired after seeing my boys' friends post things on Twitter and Instagram that left me FLOORED. My kids have phones minus my 10 year old. The older boys are ages 13, 15, 19. And each of them were given guidelines with phone usage, texting, apps and Social Media accounts. I know their passwords and I WILL check up on them. I do not check up on my 19 year old college student, but he was the original guinea pig and openly admits he appreciates and understands why I was as "protective" (overprotective?) as I was after seeing what his friends have posted and left out on the web for the world to see. However, the 10 year old's iPod is monitored along with my two teen sons phones and social media accounts.
My husband keeps a check on his kids as well and recently deleted an App/game called "Dumb Ways to Die" off of his 10 year old daughters iPod. I wrote a blog entry about that particular App today. I am curious as to what other parents think about letting your kids have specific apps for their iPods and phones. Are you the parent that:
1. Monitors regularly
2. Monitors on occasion
3. Rarely monitors
4. Never monitors and trusts they are making good decisions.
5. Refuses to let their child have an iPod/phone with apps/social media
If your kids have apps and social media, how old is "old enough"? Would love to hear more opinions on this!
