What is a "Banner URL"?
« on: Feb 27, 2013 @ 04:52 PM »
Hello!

Can someone please explain to me what a "Banner URL" is? I have a banner that I use for my blog, etc., but I don't understand the URL part of it. I'd like to post one for my profile here on TMB, but I'm not sure what it means  :-[

Thanks,
Kayla

Everything online is a file. The URL is just the location of that file. More from the FAQ's:

What is A Banner URL? How Do I Upload My Banner?

A banner URL is the link to your image on your server. Sorry, there is not an upload option but here are some instructions on finding or getting a banner URL.

First, of course, you have to have a banner either on your blog or on your computer. Do you have your banner on your blog already? If you do than you just need to right click it (when looking at it on a live page). You want to view it's properties (Address/URL). A banner URL will look something like this: http://www.yourwebsite.com/images/125banner.gif. The images folder is a common place to store banners but your URL will most likely look quiet different, depending on where your system uploads the images too. The above link is just an example. Image URLS will start with your blog, then the file path of where it's stored, then the file name and end with whatever type of image it is, usually: gif, jpeg or png.

If you are unable to upload images to your server (which is unlikely) or it's too complicated, visit a free image host such as TinyPic.Com to upload your banner. After you've uploaded your image from your computer, they will give you a URL to use. Here are in the instructions for using Tiny Pic:

  • Visit http://www.tinypic.com (no login/sign up needed)
  • Where it says, "Upload Images & Videos" click the browse button and find your graphic file on your computer
  • Click "Upload Now" then enter the security (captcha) code or follow the instructions
  • After you upload your image, on the Grab Your Code menu, you'll want to copy/paste the "Direct Link For Layouts" link
  • Under where it says "Share This Image" copy the "Direct Link For Layouts" and use this URL in your account details
  • Paste this link into your account details and your all done
  • Remember that your image will not show up instantly on your listing due to hourly site updates. Please allow a few hours for any account changes to take effect.

Hi Karen,

Every time I try to upload my banner, I'm receiving a message that says my image is too large. I'm using Tinypic... any idea how to resize my image? I've tried cropping to make it smaller but it doesn't seem to be working.

Thanks!
Sue

There are two different errors for "too large." There's weight (file size) or dimensions.  Or you might be dealing w/both in which case you'll get one error at a time. W/either, uploading to tinypic will give you a URL to use but won't change dimensions or file size. It's better to manually fix your image then upload it to tinypic (don't use there options). So you'll need to fix that with an image program or online image resize tool of some sort. Nothing fancy needed. I use Irfanview a lot for that kind of stuff. It's free and pretty simple to resample/resize images or change the file type.

For dimensions, just keep it at 125 x 125 px. If you're getting the weight error, it should say what is allowed (don't know that off hand) and you'll need to reduce it. Sometimes just changing it from a jpg to gif or png is all you need to do. But, usually, if your image is only 125 x 125 px, it shouldn't be to heavy and will clear both errors.

But mostly (as for most error questions like this).... please see the FAQ on this. The banner errors are all explained there in depth. Links, examples sizes, descriptions, etc.
