New at blogging-helppp
« on: Apr 08, 2014 @ 10:34 AM »
Hello-I am new at blogging and I wanted to ask all the bloggers out there-if I am just starting out, is it okay to register my site using the website instead of purchasing the domain? example I used weebly to create my blog, they offer a monthly fee to purchase my name successfulstayathomemom.com ,but since I am not sure if I'm any good at this yet.lol. I just used their site name http://successfulstayathomemom.weebly.com
Is that okay to do it that way? Please provide with me with your advice. Ty

I think it's ok at first. My blog is still blogspot.com, but I have purchased a custom domain through GoDaddy.com. It's been a struggle to switch to the custom name, though. I called GoDaddy for the second time tonight, and hopefully we got everything resolved.

My GoDaddy custom domain only cost about $10-15 for a year. To save yourself the hassle of having to sync your current domain with a custom domain later, I'd just start out with the custom domain, but that's my opinion. Eventually, if you do like to blog a lot, you'll for sure want to customize. Hope this helps.

Ty Kerry, for your advice. I will look into GoDaddy-the pricing seems pretty reasonable too  ;)

It's pretty cheap to register a domain name. If I was going to have to pay, I'd rather it be my own dot.com but then there's also hosting.

Definity register a domain name. It's only 10-14 a year. Skip the movies once.
That way, when you are ready to switch your blog over to self hosted, you won't lose any links!

Hi successfulstayathomemom,

If Weebly is trying to charge you a monthly fee just for your domain name then I would look elsewhere to purchase your domain name. A domain name typically costs anywhere from $9-$14 per year depending on who you register it through.

Weebly's monthly fee may also include the web hosting cost to host your domain. Keep in mind that a domain name and web hosting are two completely different things.

A domain is the URL you or anyone else types into their browser (Firefox, Chrome, IE, Safari, etc). You need to register a domain name so that you own a piece of "real estate" so-to-speak on the internet for people to access.

In the most simplest terms, web hosting for your domain is needed so that your site (URL) can be accessed online. There are costs associated with web hosting (server costs, support costs, and other operational costs) that many people aren't aware of. This is why pricing varies so much from providers because costs may differ on the back-end (server and other infrastructure costs).

If you're still looking to start your blog feel free to reach out to me and I'd be more than happy to help!

i dont see the rational for getting a free site.. you never own the property and the content you create can sometimes be used to make profit for the company you got the free site from..

you are better off getting your own property/blog

best of luck,
Ike
