Anyone else use an editorial calendar for blogging?
« on: May 15, 2013 @ 01:44 PM »
Hi everyone,

I just spotted this and thought I would share it with you all as it's so relevant:

http://www.custardandcrumble.co.uk/blog/bloggereditorialcalendar/

I'd never heard of having an editorial calendar before but I think it's a great idea. If I try and sit down and write a blog I always find it really hard to find inspiration - my ideas always come when I'm busy doing something else. I'm now thinking I could have a big calendar on the wall and when I think of an idea I pop it in there and write it up on a later date.

What does everyone else do?

I like that idea - that way it is always right in front of you.

I have gotten in the habit of using Evernote.  I have it on my computer and on my phone - so no matter where I am if I have and idea I can pop it in there.  I try to separate my ideas by keyword/subject that I right on, so I don't write on one topic too much, I can pick and choose my ideas from each topic. :-)

Funny thing is, I wrote a similar post a little while ago, but about using a digital calendar to schedule blogs:  http://www.myimperfect.com/2013/04/setting-schedule-for-blogging.html

FitnessFashionista (as well as a ton of others) have blog planners. Her planner is free. I love it. Being able to write what I'm going to post on what day, lets me plan my week out (even my month!). My planner includes social media tracking as well as blog stats tracking (updating weekly how many likes, followers, views, uniques, etc). It's worth it.  You can find some on Etsy as well that are paid for. Take the pages to Fedex and have them bound for you.

I don't have an editorial calender on paper, but I do have a schedule. For instance every Tuesday and Friday I make my rounds through Blogland and I leave comments on other people's blogs.

I also post at least three times a week.

These are great tips ladies! You've got me sidetracked in the app store and on Etsy. I've added to my ever growing TMB To-Do List... printables. I love making printable for my self then sharing them on my blog. I really should create a resource like that here as well. Once I get a blog calender and get organized, I'll try to schedule that in  ;)

I hadn't heard of an editorial calendar either, but I can see how useful that would be. Wordpress has an app that allows me to create draft blogs, complete with html, and I can publish and view stats from the app, too. So any time I have an idea, I just quickly create a draft. I've been using Twitter daily, so I haven't really thought about using a calendar. I might try it though.

What are the advantages of blog-specific editorial calendars over a regular self-made calendar? Are there special tools that a newbie like me just can't even imagine?

Thanks,
Shellie

Since last responding to this post, I was invited to use a free trial of CoSchedule. I'm loving it! My trial period is running out so I'm interested in other free services. CoSchedule has been a tremendous time-saver to be able to schedule several Tweets for the week in one setting and then live my life and watch the traffic respond to the pre-scheduled tweets. I highly recommended it.

I run a multi-authored blog, and the WordPress editorial calendar plugin is essential to our success. People only have to log into one place to see when they have a blog post assigned to them, when others are posting, and what topics are coming up. We LOVE it. In fact, it took me a couple of days between publishing my last set of assignments and getting the drafts set up in our calendar, and I heard from one of my writers about it right away!

Just this last week I started a calendar dedicated to blog activities. It acts like more of a to-do list for me so I can keep up with guest posts, affiliate commitments, product review deadlines, and writing unique content! I'm feeling like a calendar will be essential to stay organized and deliver on commitments.

For those of you using a formal editorial calendar, are there some recommended brand names you could share?

Personally I can't afford to pay for anything, and with a one-year-old I can't keep any paper around or she grabs it, so I have found some really great free ways to help me out.
#1. Notes on my iPhone-I can always just pop an idea in there whenever I think of one.
#2. Evernote-I have just discovered this one and I have transferred all the ideas from my notes on my phone to evernote. I can organize everything into notebooks and if I find a resource I like, I can just copy and paste it into the note. I can also organize the notes into notebooks for different categories if I want.
#3. Calendar- This is my favorite I think. I love google sheets, and there is an add on for templates and there is a calendar template that I can organize my posts and when they are going live so I can keep track of what I have written, what category I may need to work on soon and more.

I don't have a calendar really. If I think of something I want to blog about, I make a note on my phone. I've been searching for a good app that would let me plan out my blogs but I haven't found one yet.
