Should I Hire a Designer
« on: Jul 14, 2012 @ 05:00 AM »
Hi, I've been blogging for a few months.  The blogs I love have professionally designed sites.  I'm not that big, but I know aesthetics plays a big part (as well as content of course) in keeping readers looking at your blog.  Should I invest in a professional?  Are there inexpensive designers that people can recommend?

What blogging platform are you using? I've been using WordPress for years. I happen to be a graphic designer, and you are right - a pretty, visually well organized blog is critical. You also want to think about mobile compatibility. Have you checked out how your blog looks on an iPhone, iPad, Android? (Did I just open a whole new can of worries? Sorry!) SEO considerations also need to be thought about. The short answer to your question is: Yes! Get a designer to "pretty up" your blog - but also make sure you think about SEO. If you are using WP and have questions - I can help you there. There's a master list of plug-ins I can recommend as well as flexible, inexpensive themes you can pay a designer to customize for you.
A great resource to find inexpensive designers is odesk.com Don't be afraid to work with someone overseas - just make sure you are VERY clear in what you are asking them to do. :)
Hope this help! Send me a shout if I can help in any other way.
Cheers!

Hi Ladies!

When you're just starting out and/or you don't have loads of disposable income to really go all out with your blog, there are definitely piecemeal options that you can go with.

I work with photographers (in specific) quite a bit and many times I'm just hired to do branding (logo, colors, patterns, elements). We can then take the bits and pieces and pop them into a premade template to customize it for you. This is WAY cheaper than going full custom site. Branding is really the important part; if you've got a strong, solid brand then it should get you by with a template until you're ready to kick it up a notch in terms of functionality/internal design.

Here's one of my favorite blog template sites for wordpress:

Their themes are high functioning and really easy to manipulate. They're paid, but it's oh so worth it!

Best of luck to you!

If you're using WordPress, check out: http://www.studiopress.com

I'm not posting that to make money off of you or anything. It's what I use and what a lot of other bloggers I know use. You can get the Genesis framework with a theme for about $70-$75. I did that, edited the theme a bit and made it my own.

It's cheap compared to what I had been looking into, which was a completely customized theme by a designer for several hundred dollars. Now all I have to do is pay for my hosting every month and not worry about trying to save up enough money to get that designer to make me something!

After deciding how I wanted to layout my blog, I used elegant themes to get the template.  They provide tens of templates for $39.

I decided which colors I wanted to brand my blog and experimented with updating the theme's CSS.

I created my logo and other graphics using... (graphic designers - divert your eyes) ... PowerPoint.

The total cost for the look and feel of my blog $39.  There many references available online.

Do you think my blog looks professional?
