How Does Blogger Compare to WordPress and Others?
« on: Apr 06, 2014 @ 09:43 PM »
I'm wondering if I should switch my blog from Blogger. Is it hard to switch? I know it's a matter of preferences, but I'm wondering what others are using. Seems like WordPress gets a lot of business.

It depends on what you want to do?  Blogger is a simple blog platform (FREE) you can custom design yourself with limits. The Wordpress platform offers a wide variety of options to design your blog. You will need a web host such as GoDaddy or HostGator. Transferring your blog from Blogger to Wordpress is easy to do. http://mixednutsmommy.com/mnm-blog-design/

I'm actually just starting my blog design business and looking to help design mom blogs at a low price!  I need to build some clients and I love designing blogs. I designed my own, http://mixednutsmommy.com/

Making the switch is do able. I did it. But even though Wordpress.org offers more options, it's also way more difficult. Blogger protects you against lots of mistakes. Wordpress doesn't.

I still have several Wordpress.org blogs, but I moved several back to Blogger.

Thanks @Momfever! There are a lot of people asking here about wordpress vs blogger and I don't use either so can not ever chime in. I usually hear about people moving from Blogger to Wordpress so it's interesting to hear you've moved back to Blogger.

As a web designer, I've tried many different platforms. I used to have my personal blog on blogger. It seems to get good attention on Google, and the stats information is nice & easy to view, but it's hard to make it look very nice. I have a lot of clients on Squarespace and it seems like the easiest platform to use. Wordpress - well it's the most popular, and what I use for my blog, but its not as easy to use as blogger or Squarespace.

I switched my blog from blogger to wordpress and that's really when it started getting traffic.
I paid $18 to purchase a domain for the year (hosted through the wordpress.com platform)
The only thing is do your research between .com and .org as there are some big differences and some things (like html coding) are not supported through .com though, there are tricks to figuring out how to still link in.
Best of luck! <3

I use WordPress and I think it is awesome! I used to use Blogger when I was younger, but I remember it being very very simple in comparison to WordPress. WordPress is so much more customizable especially if you have your own host and domain name.  I taught myself how to use WordPress through trial and error and had a blog up and running in a few days. You don't need to be a web developer to use WordPress, but it definitely requires a bit more maintenance on your part to run a WordPress blog.

There are so many free resources out there for WordPress since it is so popular that you can typically find the answer to whatever you are looking for. http://www.wpbeginner.com/ is a pretty awesome website with free tutorials and resources. Maybe you can check that website out to get an idea of what using WordPress is like.

If you do have your own host and are not using the free WordPress blog, then you are able to use what are called Plugins. Plugins will allow you to do basically just about anything. This article from WPBeginner shows that you can use a plugin to import your Blogger posts with just a click AND without losing your Google rankings.

Here's the link to the article:  http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-switch-from-blogger-to-wordpress-without-losing-google-rankings/

I hope that helps! I am Team WordPress (and Team Edward hehe)! Good luck & have fun! ;D

It really depends on what you're looking for in a service and a blogger.

If you're looking for free service then you have two options 1) stick with Blogger or 2) switch over to WordPress.com

Your third option is to go the self-hosted WordPressroute, which is where you use WordPress (the software also known as a Content Management System or CMS) with a web hosting provider of your choosing.

As @mixednutsmommy mentioned, there are many web hosts such as GoDaddy and HostGator that provide web hosting that supports WordPress. Mommy Host also supports WordPress and automatically sets up WordPress for our customers on their domain. If you need help with transferring your site or migrating over from one host to another we also provide that service free of charge.

Fortunately, there are many ways to transfer your site over from Blogger to WordPress.

With more flexibility (using WordPress) this does open you up to causing issues with your site if you dig into the code or try to edit things without knowing what you're doing. In my opinion, a self-hosted version of WordPress is the route to go. Finding the right host for your self-hosted version of WordPress on your own domain is also key.

WordPress is VERY user friendly. It takes a little time to learn everything but you'll notice over time that it's very intuitive and boasts A LOT of functionality because of intregrations such as Visual Composer and other plugins available on the market today. With anything, it will take time to get used to and may be frustrating. It's a learning curve everyone goes through when they switch over to WordPress.
