  • Autism in girls: 5 reasons why it’s different
Autism in girls I often get asked why I was diagnosed with autism so late in life, and why it wasn’t caught when I was a child. There are two main reasons. The first one is that I grew up in France, a country that is decades behind in autism understanding and acceptance. Even now, in France, in 2018, families have to fight the system in order to get a diagnosis and receive therapies for their children, even those who are severely autistic. The second reason is that I’m a girl. Indeed, autism in girls is harder to spot. Generally, women are better at hiding their symptoms which makes autism in girls less obvious to the untrained eye, and even to some trained observers too. As a result, girls are diagnosed with autism with a lot less frequency than with boys. Even when properly diagnosed, autism in girls is less prevalent. To be exact, 1 in 37 boys and 1 in 151 girls is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Women also tend to be diagnosed later in life than men. This was the case for me, being diagnosed at 26 years old. If you’re here because you’re wondering whether or not […] The post Autism in girls: 5 reasons why it’s different appeared first on The Autism Cafe.

  • Summertime, road trips, and family snacks
This post was sponsored by NABISCO as part of an Influencer Activation for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own. During the summer we like to travel. More precisely, we like to go on road trips and explore the country. My friends always tell me that we’re crazy for going on such long road trips with the boys. We enjoy it though. Charlie never complains in the car, even during our 30 hour drive from Texas to Vermont. He’s perfectly content to just look out the window. Jude is, overall, a road trip expert too. He likes to draw pictures in the car and comment on the landscape around us… Mom, a cow! Daddy! Look! It’s a biiiig airplane! This year, we traveled under sad circumstances after an unexpected loss in the family so I’m even more thankful to have two little boys who make traveling in the car easy. Snacks for everyone! The key when traveling is preparation. I always make sure we have plenty of activities for the kids, snacks, and drinks for the entire family. If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you know we love NABISCO products. Walmart has […] The post Summertime, road trips, and family snacks appeared first on The Autism Cafe.

  • 3 ways to enjoy watermelon on the go
Thank you National Watermelon Promotion Board for sponsoring this post. Watermelon is the perfect portable food for enjoying wherever life takes you! Texas, summer, and snacks on the go We live in Texas, and summers are hot! It can be hard to find snacks that are both healthy and refreshing, and that the boys will actually eat. We’ve been going out a lot this summer: road trips, playgrounds, the beach, and the boys have been having a blast. I really enjoy going on outdoor adventures with them. With the heat, I’m often tempted to keep them inside but they have so much energy that they need to go out and have fun. It’s important for all of us! We’ve been trying to go to places where they can play in the water like splash pads and pools. I always bring snacks that are convenient, easy, and refreshing. I don’t think this is going to be a surprise to anyone: we are a watermelon loving family. The boys could eat an entire watermelon in one day. That’s happened more times than I can count. Today, I want to show you all the ways you can eat watermelon, and why it’s a […] The post 3 ways to enjoy watermelon on the go appeared first on The Autism Cafe.

  • Back-to-school: napkins to get the conversation started
Thank you Mardi Gras Napkins for sponsoring this post. Visit your local retailer to get the conversation going in your home too. There’s one moment I look forward to everyday: mealtime! More specifically, dinner. It’s one of my favorite times of day because it’s a time when we’re all united around the table and we talk about our days. During the day, Charlie is in therapy, Jude is at school, and Willy and I both work. Dinnertime is special! Jude has reached a point in his language development where he’s actually able to hold conversations. We have so much fun asking him questions about his day and hearing his sweet little answers. Sometimes, though, I feel like we need a little help to get conversations started. I’ve recently discovered a product that has become a must-have in our household because of its multiple uses: Mardi Gras Napkins’ Conversation Starters. They help us to ignite spontaneous family conversations with their cool illustrated prints featuring clever questions to get us talking. How to use Mardi Gras Napkins to start a conversation I know what you’re thinking… napkins are napkins. Well, these napkins are special. First of all, they’re fun, especially for kids.
